Building for the future

Today’s dust and detours will soon give way to a spectacular new Streetcar service designed to provide a safe, convenient way to travel through Downtown Atlanta.

Running along a corridor through the historic Sweet Auburn District, the campus of Georgia State University, Downtown Atlanta, and Centennial Olympic Park, the Atlanta Streetcar will provide last mile connectivity to MARTA and other transit services.  { Atlanta Streetcar Fact Sheet }

The King Center to Centennial Olympic Park

Initial funding will kick start the first phase, focusing on the Downtown east-west route connecting The King Center to the Centennial Olympic Park area west of Peachtree Street. The long-term vision for the proposed streetcar includes a north-to-south route from the Brookhaven MARTA station to Fort McPherson. There are plans for the Atlanta BeltLine to eventually connect with the Atlanta Streetcar.

Please pardon our dust

Construction efforts are already underway along the corridor, and there will be periodic road closures and detours as we install tracks and related infrastructure. We want to provide the most current information regarding these construction impact zones, and we will provide regular updates on when and where Streetcar construction work is happening.

The vision for the future

Once the dust settles and the Streetcar is operational in 2014, the heart of Downtown will be connected like never before. The Atlanta Streetcar will connect the eastern and western districts of the Downtown area that have been separated by the interstate highway “connector” for more than fifty years.

The Atlanta Streetcar will include 12 stops that will offer easy access to Centennial Olympic Park, the World of Coca-Cola, CNN Center, the Georgia Aquarium, the Georgia World Congress Center, Georgia Dome, Philips Arena, the Tabernacle, The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, the future homes of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights and the College Football Hall of Fame, the historic Auburn Avenue community, and the vibrant Edgewood Avenue district. The Atlanta Streetcar will also connect with MARTA’s rail and bus systems, with Breeze Card compatibility. Eventually, the Atlanta Streetcar will offer connections to the Atlanta BeltLine.

As they become available, additional federal funding opportunities will be pursued to further fund the streetcar’s expansion – including a proposed north-to-south route from the Brookhaven MARTA station to Fort McPherson.  { Atlanta Streetcar Fact Sheet }
